In the Midst of Chaos

This morning I am finding myself pulled in so many directions, I just want to sit… and do nothing. My son has been sick for a couple of days, and I have had to miss work to care for him, so I feel entirely out of sorts right now. Plus, we got a new dog which is totally shaking up our routine. I swear he needs more attention than the kid does, (I am laughing about this of course, as he is a pup and it is to be expected.) And being sick, my little one needs his mommy, which is so cute since he is the last one at home.

The good thing is, I finished the edits to Recovery (notice the new name!!!), and it is now in the hands of my new publisher. For those of you who have not heard, I did sign with a traditional publisher. They are a smaller firm, which I totally love because I will get personal attention, and yet they don’t charge me to do stuff with my books, which means they only get paid if my books do well. I love this, as it puts the emphasis where it belongs – on making good quality books for my readers!

We are going to revamp the covers on books 1 and 2, and I can’t wait for those to be released with something that looks less ‘self-helpish’ and more engaging. As many of you know, I am getting great reviews for what’s on the inside, and it is time the outside looked as good.

We are also going to make some changes to the titles, so the books will be easier to locate in searches, which is great!!! The series will be shortened to Life Series, or maybe it was Life of… Series. Not sure there, but it will be one of those two. The books will become one word titles… Recovery, Doubt, Love (coming in May), and so on, which is also a vast improvement. There will be a re-release on those first two, and we will have more control over pricing, so I can’t wait to see what kind of deals they come up with to promote them.

Finally, I took book one and totally overhauled the interior. There were quite a few typos that needed fixed (10 is too many to me and was driving me nuts), and I was able to streamline 2 of the chapters that I never really liked the way they flowed in the finished work. The story itself is the same as it was, it just looks and feels better without compromising anything with the overall outcome. And of course, I did not have to pay someone to make the changes, which is the best news of all.

I am starting on the Doubt interior today, and I will be cleaning up those few errors that were in that one as well. However, I was already on to my old publisher by the time it came out, so it is in a lot better shape over all and so the changes inside won’t be nearly so much or as noticeable, as they will pertain solely to correcting grammar stuff. I am going to add one thing to it though… I am going to give it a Prologue about the note that Eli wrote inside the German Fairytale book, and I may release that here on my blog at some point for those of you who already purchased Life of Doubt. As much as I want to sell copies, I wouldn’t want you to buy it all over again just to see that.

Gosh, this is just what I needed. I think I am ready to get to work. Have a great day everyone!!!

I Can Twitter!!!

Oh my god – I get it!!! I have been messing with twitter off and on for weeks and could just not get my head around what the heck it was all about. So you guys leave me some comments here if I am or am not on the right track.

Twitter is like a massive instant message system. With like 140 characters per message. That means if you have a lot to say, too bad, you have got to cut it down. That is not really the hard part though.

The hard part are these silly hash-tag things. I just could not understand, but I refused to give up. So I played around with it, looked at other people’s tweets, did some clicking, and it is too funny… #anewlife has almost no one using it, and #lifeofrecovery had 3, including me. That is hilarious. The thing I have run into most during normal searches is OVERUSE and not being able to find my book when I am looking for it with one of those.

Now, I think what is supposed to happen is you are supposed to use tags that are popular, and I have that covered. So far I have tried out #goodbook, #suspense #romance, #romantic #suspense, #ebook, and #amazon.

Most of those get a good deal of traffic, but #amazon you can’t even keep up with. I love this!!! I want to make little tweets that have pieces out of my book just to attach the tags now, isn’t that funny? And here a few weeks ago I was thinking about not using it at all.

I do have one thought though… is it possible to over tweet?  I mean, I don’t want to run everyone off, now that I have over 70 followers – which I want to thank Up All Night Book Blog for most of those. If you haven’t gotten in on their drawing for a signed copy of my book, you still have about a day left.

Anyways, I hope that I don’t run anyone off, but I will probably start doing more tweeting now that I get how the silly thing works and see where it leads. Another new adventure – weeeeee.

If you want to follow me, I would love to have you, @SamJacobey, and feel free to retweet anything you like… I am loving this.

Reflecting Upon the Past

I woke up early again today – just before 4 am. I have been sick, and still not really feeling myself. Unsure of what I wanted to write about today, I just scrolled through my blog and read my posts, reflecting on what they said. Then, I realized what I want to say most today.

Reflection is something I don’t think we spend enough time doing in our busy world today. I know for myself, I do reflect about things, or obsess about events, but that worry over how things should have gone or what should have happened isn’t really reflection. It reminds me of JFK, where the “who and the what” are just for show, and keeps us from getting to the important part… the “why” of things.

True reflection is an honest evaluation of some event, why it was what it was. For example, when planning a lesson, a teacher goes through several stages, from gathering materials and planning, to implementing and instructing, and finally reflecting. That last piece is often left out, but is necessary if he or she is going to objectively look at the effectiveness of the lesson and carry that on to the next one.

So how does this apply to everyone else? Well, for starters, it reminds me so much of Dr. Phil, and his “and how’s that working out for you?” I have had a few people say this to me over the years, and to be honest it was a real eye opener. For example, it is far more effective than a lecture could ever be, as it requires self reflection and honesty from within. I have adopted it for myself, and try to use it when ever I can to get the people who are complaining about some aspect of their lives or some turn of events that seems to be recurrent in their lives to think about why this is actually happening rather than focusing on the events themselves.

There is that old saying, something about those who do not learn from their mistakes are destined to repeat them. We can’t learn if we don’t take the time to reflect, and with so much activity going on around us, who has time for that? I guess that is one reason I have learned to be an early riser, normally getting up at 5 am and not waking anyone else in the house until 6 am. I do this so that I have that first full hour to be calm and gather my energy for the day. It also makes me see more clearly, having the quiet without interruptions to impede my train of thought.

Specifically, I am loving this blog. More than I thought that I would, and looking back at my first few posts I can see and am reminded of how unsure I was about putting so much out for other people to read. However, I am now grateful that those posts are out there, and that I can look back over this whole process and… reflect. I can now see why journals are so effective for people who are wanting to grow and change, and I definitely recommend doing some type of blogging or journaling to anyone and everyone pretty much. You never know what you are going to learn about yourself when you have it in writing to go back and read.

Where in the world is Tori Farrell?

Haha, couldn’t resist. And those of you who get the reference know what I am talking about…

Ok, so I have been working on promoting my book, trying to get ready for the second one to release etc. Speaking of which, I sent in the final paperwork this morning, so as soon as Life of Doubt clears the final content evaluation, it will go to press YIPEE!!! But I digress…

So, in the midst of all this heavy promoting business, I have been working with numerous blogs and reviews who are giving away copies of my first book, Life of Recovery. I have learned how to gift ebooks and have given away quite a few of those, but I also have been sending out paperback copies, signed mind you, as well.

I love giving things away, call it a weakness. So I honestly have been having a field day with this, and make a trip to the post office several times a week to mail out these books (I am working on my second set now). My son, my baby, the last one in the house, is eleven. He has been helping me out so to speak, little buddy that he is, and today we were mailing a book to Europe. He has been keeping track and knows that we have sent them to Ireland and Mexico as well. Of course this is an ADULT novel, so he has no idea what the book is about, but he knows that it is important to me, and therefore important to him as he is still mama’s boy.

Of course, being that young, he still does not have a strong grasp on world geography and where these places actually are on the globe, and so we hit upon a teachable moment. Those of you who are educators and parents know exactly what I am talking about – that moment when the desire to know something or some other crazy thing happens where a person just has an epiphany about some… thing. And I got this idea…

I love my fans and I love sending out these books to them, especially to these far away places. So, we are going to get a world map to hang on the wall here in the office – kind of like a situation room where someone is investigating a crime or tracking something globally, and mark all of the places that we mail one of my books. Isn’t that great? Well, we think that it is, and I know it is going to be special to both of us as we go through this fun and exciting process.

So, I have about 12 more books on my shelf that are set to be given away on blogs here in the next few weeks. If you keep an eye on the front page here, I have devoted that space to letting you guys know where the hot spots are for give-aways. And of course, I have another box of books coming in about 2 weeks and will be lining those up for give-aways as well. Your job will be to keep spreading the word about my stories and signing up to win so that my son and I can continue to play our little game and see just how far out into the world our favorite heroine will go.

A Special Treat for You… and Me

I have been working on so many things the last few weeks, and as it is Sunday, I decided to give myself a special treat. I love my books and the story they hold, and the thing that makes me the happiest is to share it.

In celebration of this, I prepared a special small excerpt from Book 1 – Life of Recovery.

It is a very simple portion, yet it gives a great deal of insight into Tori’s character, her upbringing, and her frame of mind, both in the past and for the present. Please give it a read and see what you think…

Home Sweet Home

Have a great day!!!

Finally… a Blurb Worth Sharing =)

I worked on this all day today – and with the help of a fellow author DAMIAN STEVENSON, this is what we came up with…

Book 1 – A New Life: Life of Recovery

The Dragons raised her to be strong. They taught her how to kill. They got more than they bargained for…

Now she is free, or so she thinks, but can she truly escape her brutal past, finding true love amidst the sex and intrigue?

Tori Farrell is on a mission to find her true identity, to break the ties to a dark underworld for good, and to save the people she cares about most – the family she has never known.

She wants a new life, but first she must lay to rest the demons of her past.

I made a poster for it too…

Book 1

I really like this – it was a day well spent!!!
