Facebook Blues

I’m not sure how many of you use Facebook, but I have been on it daily ever since I set up my author page. Previous to that, I never used it, and didn’t see what the big deal was, or why people would want to put so much of their personal lives out there for the whole world to see.

After I published my first book, I started looking for ways to market it, and that’s when I got hooked. That’s right, I’m an addict. I have spent countless hours clicking around, sharing posts and checking out other peoples pages. And since I have only been a user for 7 or 8 months, I don’t really know what it was like before that. I do know that the changes that they have recently made… suck.

And I say suck in the nicest way possible. I mean, lets face it, I totally understand why they did it. Most people don’t use a conventional computer any more. Most people use a tablet or some other device, so the streamlined feeds for every page makes sense. I still hate them.

Used to, when you came to my page it was amazing. I mean it, I loved my page. I put stuff on it that was informative about my books, some advertisements, reviews, and upcoming events, but I also put stuff that was fun. I love puzzles and interesting food for thought items, and my page was plastered with them.

I also kept my page clean. Everything had a visual appeal, down to the way the little boxes fit together on my screen. I loved pinning a post and providing an experience when you visited my page, would make sure it was all current, and would remove or hide things if they didn’t fit in with what I had in mind. It was perfect. And… it’s gone. Sigh.

So today, I have realized that I don’t spend near as much time on good old Facebook as I once did. I guess it’s because I’m depressed that my page doesn’t look as appealing to me. Or maybe it’s the resentment I still feel that even though I have almost 6000 likes and followers, my posts don’t make it to more than a few 100 people… unless they are of a cat or I pay to ‘sponsor’ them. I have noticed that one guy sponsors his daily pic, with his cup of coffee and a cute little saying to think about. That’s ok, I’ll pass. I have better things to do with my money.

I will just go, suffer through my withdrawals… and continue to look for another social media place that I can mess around with and call home. Any suggestions?

I Can Twitter!!!

Oh my god – I get it!!! I have been messing with twitter off and on for weeks and could just not get my head around what the heck it was all about. So you guys leave me some comments here if I am or am not on the right track.

Twitter is like a massive instant message system. With like 140 characters per message. That means if you have a lot to say, too bad, you have got to cut it down. That is not really the hard part though.

The hard part are these silly hash-tag things. I just could not understand, but I refused to give up. So I played around with it, looked at other people’s tweets, did some clicking, and it is too funny… #anewlife has almost no one using it, and #lifeofrecovery had 3, including me. That is hilarious. The thing I have run into most during normal searches is OVERUSE and not being able to find my book when I am looking for it with one of those.

Now, I think what is supposed to happen is you are supposed to use tags that are popular, and I have that covered. So far I have tried out #goodbook, #suspense #romance, #romantic #suspense, #ebook, and #amazon.

Most of those get a good deal of traffic, but #amazon you can’t even keep up with. I love this!!! I want to make little tweets that have pieces out of my book just to attach the tags now, isn’t that funny? And here a few weeks ago I was thinking about not using it at all.

I do have one thought though… is it possible to over tweet?  I mean, I don’t want to run everyone off, now that I have over 70 followers – which I want to thank Up All Night Book Blog for most of those. If you haven’t gotten in on their drawing for a signed copy of my book, you still have about a day left.

Anyways, I hope that I don’t run anyone off, but I will probably start doing more tweeting now that I get how the silly thing works and see where it leads. Another new adventure – weeeeee.

If you want to follow me, I would love to have you, @SamJacobey, and feel free to retweet anything you like… I am loving this.

Big Weekend… at home

Sometimes I think I must be un-American. I hate shopping. Well, hate is a strong word. I like shopping, on certain occasions. I do not enjoy shopping when there are many other people shopping.

My sister-in-law does the black Friday thing every year. Fortunately, she has never asked me to go. I like being around people, I just want to maintain my own space, and pushing through crowds to get to the next item on my list is not the way to go. Besides the fact, it is annoying to plan on getting something, and then find that it is all sold out.

Over the years I have tried several methods to deal with this problem and still get all my shopping done. One particular year, during a stent at a retail department store, I bought Christmas all year long. Literally. I had the entire top of my closet stuffed with trash bags that hid everyone’s gifts. I bought things that were on sale, and had tons for everyone in the family by the time Christmas arrived. It was a blast handing all of it out.

There have also been years I went the opposite, waiting until the last minute and grabbing one small item for each person on my list in a midnight trip to wal-mart. I spent a lot less money that year for sure.

This year, I am not going to be doing a lot of shopping. Going to get a few gifts for the kids in the family and that is about it. Otherwise, I am spending all my time making new addys for my books. I have also been reading a few other authors works and posting some reviews, a nice switch I think.

The house is really quiet right now, which is also nice. No kids here this weekend, and I will be missing the noise soon, but for right now, I am really enjoying it.

Finally… a Blurb Worth Sharing =)

I worked on this all day today – and with the help of a fellow author DAMIAN STEVENSON, this is what we came up with…

Book 1 – A New Life: Life of Recovery

The Dragons raised her to be strong. They taught her how to kill. They got more than they bargained for…

Now she is free, or so she thinks, but can she truly escape her brutal past, finding true love amidst the sex and intrigue?

Tori Farrell is on a mission to find her true identity, to break the ties to a dark underworld for good, and to save the people she cares about most – the family she has never known.

She wants a new life, but first she must lay to rest the demons of her past.

I made a poster for it too…

Book 1

I really like this – it was a day well spent!!!
