My 2 am Revelation – I don’t Write Romance

I woke up at 2 am with an epiphany of sorts and the deep desire to share it with you. I realize that I have not blogged in some time – too busy with writing and life… but this you have got to hear.

How many authors really LIKE reviews? Hmmm. I for one have reviews that I like, but I also have some that I want to grab the reviewer and shake them and say…. “You don’t even know the details of the story; you are missing MAJOR parts and your reading comprehension is way off base – how could you possible understand it???”

That being said, even those who have the wrong name for the main character, have no idea of the year or context of the book, or have missed some giant detail that makes everything they know about a book completely false – even they can and do have some merit. That is exactly the case with a review I just saw come through a few days ago that says that one of my books is NOT a romance, and to her I can emphatically reply – NO – it’s not!!!

I have said this to so many people at meet and greets, Facebook Events, and book signings – I don’t write romance, even though my books almost always contain a romantic element. The people in my stories are always caught up in an incredible adventure, sometimes an incredibly HORRIBLE adventure; that’s what my stories are about. They are suspense and/or thriller. When, how and even IF they fall in love is something that happens along the way, not the reason their story is being told. Sometimes they end up together and sometimes they don’t, and this isn’t CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE, so YOU do not get to pick the ending.

My books will never be Harlequin’s; they  will never follow a ‘romantic arch’ or fit in any cookie-cutter mold you want to stuff them into with a neatly predictable plot line. There are going to be surprises you didn’t see coming. There are going to be elements you never thought of and choices (hard damn choices) you aren’t always going to understand or like. That’s what a Samantha Jacobey book is all about, and I have enough GREAT reviews to know that is exactly what MANY readers enjoy most about my work.

So what did I gain from this cathartic awakening? I realized that I LOVE reviews – even bad ones! I love to have people say things that get me to thinking and considering the possibilities; I guess that’s the debater in me. They help me get to the deepest question of them all – why? I find myself asking that most often after someone has blasted me on Amazon or Goodreads, and like with all living things, I find that struggle and strife are good for me; they help me to reflect and make me stronger in the end.

Therefore, I want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who writes a review – good, bad, wrong, or ugly. You keep voicing those opinions, and I will keep putting out books that make you scratch your head and say… “Damn; I didn’t see that coming.”

SOMETHING happened to me today…

Today, INTREPID, book 6 of the series became available for pre-order on amazon, and I can’t explain it…

I have an extremely HIGH sense of elation right now – something along the lines of what I felt when the first book was published. Maybe even higher.

We are so close to the end, and I have met so many wonderful people on this journey. Thank you all for your support, your time and your energy.

I work to promote my books every day, and I now have a following that works just as hard as I do… you guys are wonderful, and I thank you so much for being there!!!

Intrepid – A New Life SeriesBook 6 of a New Life Series

When past and present collide, how do you escape your fate?

Tori Farrell is finally on the path that leads to a bright future. Raised to be an assassin, she lived in a world consisting of drugs, sex, violence and murder. Gaining her freedom, and discovering her true identity, she has reconciled the life she was born to have with the one she fought so hard to flee. Managing to hold on to her soul mate, she is pushing forward, refusing to allow the fear to hold her back any longer.
Taking her place in her brother’s band, Tori faces new challenges. Learning to live the life of a rock star seems easy enough, and she quickly gets a handle on what she holds most dear. Soon however, the tables are turned, with the realization that the FBI has merely taken to the shadows, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Only when her former lover forces his way back into her life does it become clear; some things are simply meant to be…

Life of Doubt Teaser

It has been such an AWESOME DAY… I wanted to leave you guys with another Life of Doubt Teaser… This is a little meeting of the FBI agents who are working on Tori’s case….

Remaining after the room had cleared, Dr. Bennet, Warren La Buff, and James Godfry sat in the tiny chamber. Leaning back in his chair, La Buff lamented, “I think we should have brought the judge in on this. He isn’t going to be too pleased when he finds out he was duped.”

“How is he going to find out?” Dr. Bennet countered. “The only way anyone will ever know is if her identity is discovered and a birth certificate is located, which it won’t be. Otherwise, no one will question my judgment.”

La Buff narrowed his eyes at the doctor’s words. “Don’t get cocky. You better hope no one finds out. I cannot believe I am even involved in this.”

Godfry gave him a wry grin, “Like you have never done anything that wasn’t by the book. Come on, this is perfect. The judge signed the papers.” He turned his palms toward the ceiling, indicating his hands were clean and continued, “The girl practically works for us already. All we do now is give her a few weeks on her own, and then we reel her in. You guys can get her off on her little assignment, and when she is done with that, we offer her a full time job doing what she is best at.”

The three men stared at each other, considering what Tori Farrell was best at, the pause in the conversation growing long. La Buff nodded slowly, “All I can say is, you are fucking with a girl who has murdered about a dozen of the worst men we have ever had on the books. You better hope she never finds out you did this to her on purpose, under false pretenses. I don’t think she would bat an eyelash taking care of any of us in the same manner.”

Book 2 – Life of Doubt Trailer Video

Once again, I have been forced to work things out for myself. I paid someone to create a trailer for Life of Recovery and Life of Doubt weeks ago, and so far all I have gotten is a sad video for the first one. And by sad I mean… I hated it. That would just not do.

I got up this morning at normal time, 5 am, made coffee and set to work on the second video, Life of Doubt. I had already mapped out the song I wanted to use and the items that were to go into the video. All I had to do was figure out how to use the movie maker and upload it… how hard could that be?

It actually took about two hours for me to figure out how to use the program effectively, getting all of the timing exactly as I wanted it, and to complete the video. It also took another half an hour to get it uploaded, but it is done.

Now all I need is for a few people to go look at it and tell me what you think… so how about it?

Where in the world is Tori Farrell?

Haha, couldn’t resist. And those of you who get the reference know what I am talking about…

Ok, so I have been working on promoting my book, trying to get ready for the second one to release etc. Speaking of which, I sent in the final paperwork this morning, so as soon as Life of Doubt clears the final content evaluation, it will go to press YIPEE!!! But I digress…

So, in the midst of all this heavy promoting business, I have been working with numerous blogs and reviews who are giving away copies of my first book, Life of Recovery. I have learned how to gift ebooks and have given away quite a few of those, but I also have been sending out paperback copies, signed mind you, as well.

I love giving things away, call it a weakness. So I honestly have been having a field day with this, and make a trip to the post office several times a week to mail out these books (I am working on my second set now). My son, my baby, the last one in the house, is eleven. He has been helping me out so to speak, little buddy that he is, and today we were mailing a book to Europe. He has been keeping track and knows that we have sent them to Ireland and Mexico as well. Of course this is an ADULT novel, so he has no idea what the book is about, but he knows that it is important to me, and therefore important to him as he is still mama’s boy.

Of course, being that young, he still does not have a strong grasp on world geography and where these places actually are on the globe, and so we hit upon a teachable moment. Those of you who are educators and parents know exactly what I am talking about – that moment when the desire to know something or some other crazy thing happens where a person just has an epiphany about some… thing. And I got this idea…

I love my fans and I love sending out these books to them, especially to these far away places. So, we are going to get a world map to hang on the wall here in the office – kind of like a situation room where someone is investigating a crime or tracking something globally, and mark all of the places that we mail one of my books. Isn’t that great? Well, we think that it is, and I know it is going to be special to both of us as we go through this fun and exciting process.

So, I have about 12 more books on my shelf that are set to be given away on blogs here in the next few weeks. If you keep an eye on the front page here, I have devoted that space to letting you guys know where the hot spots are for give-aways. And of course, I have another box of books coming in about 2 weeks and will be lining those up for give-aways as well. Your job will be to keep spreading the word about my stories and signing up to win so that my son and I can continue to play our little game and see just how far out into the world our favorite heroine will go.

A Special Treat for You… and Me

I have been working on so many things the last few weeks, and as it is Sunday, I decided to give myself a special treat. I love my books and the story they hold, and the thing that makes me the happiest is to share it.

In celebration of this, I prepared a special small excerpt from Book 1 – Life of Recovery.

It is a very simple portion, yet it gives a great deal of insight into Tori’s character, her upbringing, and her frame of mind, both in the past and for the present. Please give it a read and see what you think…

Home Sweet Home

Have a great day!!!

Blog Review – the First Word Is In!!!

I am so excited, I can hardly contain myself. My first blogged review is UP!!!    http://msme28reviews.blogspot.com/2013/11/review-new-life-life-of-recovery-by.html is the link, and it is 4 stars WOOT!!!

I realize many people would be disappointed at not getting 5 on their first try, but getting 4 on my the first blog review for my first novel ever just makes me so ecstatic – especially when I will be the first to tell you, Book 1 – Life of Recovery is not the best one in the series.

I think it is good, don’t get me wrong, but  as it is dark and full of background information, almost like a prequel to the rest of the set. And I know they get better as they go…

Now I cannot wait to see what others have to say about this book, as well as the ones that will be following. Thank you so much Myra for reading and posting this for me, I know being the first on something like this is tough, as there are so many authors out there now, all wanting to get their books read and reviewed, and I truly appreciate your time.

I realize this may qualify as the worst blog post ever, but I have to go now… I need a tissue…

Much love,

Sam

Random Vs. Random

I love the word random. It implies so many things. I myself am a random person. That means that I have the tendency to change directions in quick, unpredictable moments of fancy. Now, those who have known me the longest are calling BS at this exact moment, because I am also known as a planner, keeping my work done far in advance and coming up with some very great plans. I keep my day’s schedule lined out, seeming to be upset when things are not moving according to plan. What they don’t realize is, that this is a coping mechanism to counteract my randomness and to help me be successful in a non-random world.

So what exactly does it mean to be random? To me, it means that I can think fast on my feet and can come up with information and ideas at a moments notice, and often these are great plans. I have held many jobs where this ability has served me well. Working with a large number of people, such as with the public, being able to change directions or come up with a plan on the fly is a great benefit. It also means that I am pretty unpredictable and have to work hard not to be scattered.

What it really means is that the creative juices always flow, and that I am thinking when there is no reason to be. I guess you could say I am planning, even when there is no benefit to planning. There have been times that I would have paid to make the never ending stream of thoughts that go on inside my head stop, and just be quiet, and enjoy the moment, and stop planning or thinking 5 steps ahead. Perhaps this is why those who know me and see me from the outside think I am a planner; because to some extent, they are right.

I am a planner. I plan ahead and hope for the best. Then I change the plan. Often. By the time we get there, how things go is seldom how my plan started out. Furthermore, having things go according to plan is sometimes downright  boring. I mean, I love doing things that I plan on for a while, but then after it has been going for a bit, or I really get good at it, I just get tired and I am ready to do something else. That’s random. Or was that the plan?

So here is my random act of the day – giving my books away. I changed my cover page here on my blog to explain how I am going to do that. If you are interested in checking out a FREE copy of my book – Life of Recovery, be sure to visit the main page on my blog. Now for the plan…. you need to be 18+, as this is an Adult Novel, and it is NOT a self-help book, nor is it of a religious base. If you are interested in receiving a free copy, please visit my new front page at https://samanthajacobey.wordpress.com/, as the page that I planned and put there is now boring to me and I have selected another to take its place. See, I guess that was the plan.

Tone and Poor Word Choice

This wasn’t the first item I wanted to cover from my last post in more detail, but it has become the most pressing in my mind since it was added. I have been reading some of the works of my fellow indie authors, and it has been a lot of fun seeing what they are up to. I have been thinking about what makes a work that is enjoyable, and I have come to strongly believe that word choice is a major player in that arena. Have you ever read a piece that had limited word choice? I am currently reading a book I shall not name, largely because I would never publicly bash someone’s blood sweat and tears unless I could not find a single ‘nice’ thing to say about it, and I do not want anyone to take this the wrong way. Beside, overall, the story is enjoyable, and although it was slow to warm up, it is coming along nicely, with one minor flaw: repetitive word use.

Now you may be wondering what I mean by that, so allow me to explain. Given all the words there are in the English language, we often have options that allow us to say exactly the same thing in a variety of ways. Why is it then, that writers become stuck in a rut and use the same words or phrases at regular intervals? This is something I mostly became aware of when I was rereading some of my own work, and I have made it my personal ambition to NOT reuse the same verbs, nouns and adjectives at too high a frequency. To say something is beautiful is nice. To say it twice on the same page detracts from the sincerity. To say it 3 or more times on the same page becomes monotonous.

How can one work to avoid falling into this boring habit? For starters, there is a nifty tool that can be accessed simply by double clicking a word to highlight it, then right clicking to view the alternate options under synonyms. Of course, you have to know exactly what the word means that you are implying, as well as the one that you are opting for, as the fine line between what you meant to say and what you actually said can be crucial. There was a post recently that I followed on FB discussing a self-published book that was horrid in this regard to the point of being hysterical. The author had followed this trick, but had chosen words that didn’t mean anywhere close to what was intended.

That leads us to the second part of using this device; if you aren’t 100% sure, or have any doubt, use the dictionary to look up either or both words, used and options, to be sure the alignment is there before you make the trade. I am sure you all know what a malapropism is, but in case any of you are not familiar with it, I will elaborate. This is a literary term that refers to using an incorrect word that sounds like the one that it is being mistaken for; such as referring to the kiddy pool as the kitty pool. If you were speaking, you might be able to get away with such a slip, but in writing, it stands out more, especially if you decide to switch out ‘kitty’ to make it more interesting and end up with some outlandish non-plausible word choices in it’s place.

Finally, I feel I should address what all of this has to do with Tone, as I titled this article with the purpose of making that connection. The tone of your work comes largely from the words you put into it, kind of like you are cooking up a pot of stew that is flavored by the items you put in the pot. If all you put in are potatoes, then all you get is potato soup. However, if you toss in a wider variety of items, you get a great deal more flavor, and you are able to adjust the tone of your work more finely, taking your reader to new highs and lows more easily and far more believably. Ignoring this fact could drive readers away from your offerings, as having to read that people never walk, run, jog, meander, wander or saunter anywhere, but they are always ‘headed’ where ever they are going can at some point leave your readers looking for the exit to escape what might have been a good story with just a little more appropriate descriptive language.
